Granite Countertops in Utah
The most popular natural stone in Utah homes — for good reason. Granite is heat-resistant, scratch-resistant, and every slab is one of a kind. Fabricated and installed by Howard Gerstner with 25+ years of hands-on stone experience.
Why Granite Is Still Utah's #1 Counter Material
Granite has been the go-to countertop material for Utah homeowners for decades — and despite newer engineered options flooding the market, it remains the top request at Granite Countertops of Utah LLC. The reason is simple: when you want a surface that looks genuinely luxurious, feels substantial underfoot, and is forgiving enough to handle the heat of a serious cooking household, granite consistently outperforms the alternatives.
Granite is an igneous rock formed deep within the earth under extreme heat and pressure. That geological origin is exactly what makes it such a durable surface. Unlike porcelain or quartz composites, granite is a true natural stone — no resins, no binders, no polymers. Every slab pulled from a quarry is structurally unique, patterned by millions of years of mineral movement, meaning no two kitchens in Utah will ever look exactly alike.
What Makes Our Granite Work Different
Howard Gerstner has been cutting and installing stone across the Wasatch Front for over 25 years. That experience shows in the details: the flatness of a seam, the fit of a mitered edge at a 90-degree cabinet corner, the way an undermount sink cutout sits flush without any visible gap. These are not things you can fake with speed. They come from repetition and a deep understanding of how different stone types behave under a diamond blade.
When you work with us, Howard is your point of contact from the first measurement through final polish. He visits your home personally to take precise measurements — in Utah, where many homes have non-standard kitchen configurations, older cabinetry layouts, or unexpected level changes in the floor, that in-person measurement step is not optional. It is the difference between a perfect installation and a frustrating one.

Popular Granite Colors in Utah Homes
Utah homeowners tend to gravitate toward warm, earthy granite tones that complement the natural backdrop of the state — though bold contrasting slabs are increasingly popular in modern builds in areas like Lehi, Herriman, and Saratoga Springs. Some of our most frequently requested granite families include:
- White Ice / Arctic White — A clean, bright white with soft grey veining. Ideal for open-plan kitchens seeking an airy feel.
- Giallo Ornamental — Warm cream and gold tones with flecks of burgundy and black. Extremely versatile with wood cabinetry.
- Black Galaxy — A deep black base with gold and silver mineral dusting. Stunning against white cabinetry.
- River White / Colonial White — A medium-tone stone with grey and burgundy veining. A perennial bestseller in Utah County.
- Ubatuba — Deep green-black with gold and green mineral flecks. Pairs beautifully with darker cabinetry tones.
How to Care for & Clean Granite Countertops
Granite is incredibly durable, but because it is a natural, porous stone, it requires a slightly different maintenance approach than engineered quartz. With the right routine, your granite will literally last a lifetime.
Daily Cleaning Routine
- Wipe Spills Promptly: Granite is usually well-sealed, but acidic liquids (like lemon juice, wine, or tomato sauce) left to sit can eventually penetrate the seal and stain the stone.
- Use Mild Soap & Water: Warm water and a few drops of dish soap are perfect for daily wipedowns.
- Use Dedicated Granite Cleaners: For a streak-free shine, rely on pH-neutral stone cleaners. They won't slowly eat away at your protective sealant like typical household cleaners do.
- Dry Thoroughly: Always use a clean microfiber cloth to buff the counter dry. This prevents water spots, especially around the sink where hard Utah water can leave mineral deposits.
The Importance of Sealing
Unlike quartz, granite must be sealed to protect it from absorbing liquids and stains. We apply a commercial-grade sealer upon installation, but you will need to re-apply it periodically.
- When to Seal: Generally, re-seal every 1 to 3 years. Lighter granites (like River White) tend to be more porous and may need sealing annually. Dark granites (like Ubatuba or Black Galaxy) are very dense and might only need it every 3–5 years.
- The Water Test: Not sure if it's time? Splash a few drops of water on the counter. If it beads up, your seal is intact. If the stone darkens and absorbs the water within a few minutes, it's time to re-seal.
What NOT to Do (Crucial Warnings)
- No Acidic Cleaners: Never clean granite with vinegar, lemon juice, Windex, bleach, or bathroom tub/tile cleaners. These acids will rapidly strip the sealant and can permanently etch the physical stone.
- Beware of Standing Water: Don't leave damp sponges, soap bottles, or wet dishrags sitting on the counter constantly, as they can cause dark water rings.
- Weight Distribution: While very hard, granite is rigid. Never sit or stand on the unsupported overhangs of your kitchen island.
