Choosing Your Stone

Quartz vs. Granite vs. Porcelain? We break down the pros, cons, and performance of nature's best materials to help you choose the perfect surface for your Utah home.

At Granite Countertops Utah, we've installed thousands of surfaces over the last 25 years. While every stone we work with is premium grade, the "right" choice depends on your space, your lifestyle, and how you plan to use it.

Quartz vs. Natural Stone (Granite & Quartzite)

This is the most common debate in modern kitchen remodeling. Do you go with the engineered perfection of Quartz, or the one-of-a-kind natural beauty of Granite or Quartzite?

Quartz (Engineered)

  • Non-porous: Never needs sealing
  • Incredible stain resistance
  • Consistent pattern & color
  • Tough against chips and cracks

Natural Stone (Granite/Quartzite)

  • Total heat resistance (hot pans!)
  • 100% unique, one-of-a-kind patterns
  • Increases home resale value significantly
  • Timeless, high-end organic feel

Quartz vs. Porcelain

Porcelain slabs are the rising star in Utah stone design. While Quartz has been the king for years, Porcelain offers a different performance profile, especially for modern, thin-profile looks.

Choosing Quartz if...

  • You want a thick, solid edge profile.
  • You prefer a massive variety of colors.
  • You want the most established, durable engineered product on the market.

Choosing Porcelain if...

  • You are doing an outdoor kitchen (Porcelain is UV stable).
  • You want a modern, "thin-slab" aesthetic.
  • You want maximum heat resistance among manufactured stones.

Quartzite vs. Marble

Everyone loves the look of Marble, but few love the maintenance. If you want the "Marble look" but have a busy family kitchen, Quartzite is often the answer.

Quartzite is a natural stone that is actually harder than granite. It often features the soft grey and white veining of marble but offers the durability required for a high-traffic kitchen island.

Exotic & Specialized Stones

Soapstone: The Velvet Stone

Soapstone is a non-porous natural stone that is famous for its heat resistance and silky feel. It develops a natural patina over time, but many homeowners use mineral oil to achieve a deep, dark charcoal look. It's the perfect choice for a classic, high-performance kitchen.

Onyx: The Showstopper

Onyx is a semi-precious stone known for its translucency. When backlit with LED panels, an Onyx countertop glows with incredible depth. Because it is softer and more porous than granite, we typically recommend Onyx for bar tops, powder rooms, or decorative features rather than high-traffic kitchen islands.

Limestone: Soft & Organic

Limestone offers a muted, earthy palette that is perfect for soft, organic interior designs. However, it is quite porous and susceptible to etching from acids (like lemon juice). It is a beautiful choice for bathroom vanities or fireplace surrounds where the soft aesthetic is the priority.

Expert Tip from Howard

"The best way to choose is to touch it in person. We've seen homeowners fall in love with a Quartz sample, only to find a slab of natural Quartzite that they absolutely had to have. I always recommend visiting a stone warehouse to see the full slabs before you make your final call."
